What is a robonaut?
Until today, that was unknown. Thanks to a family who sent the link to "teach the teacher" (love that!), that question can be answered by looking at the following link from NASA:
Robonaut - NASA
It's a terrific extension of what we are learning, relates to current events and discovery in progress, and has beautiful images for family discussion. Enjoy!
The blog will look different due to a suggestion to only use bullet points. Essentially, it will become a list of what we have focused on for the day. Questions you can ask your child will still be included.
* starting sentences with introductory phrases - still focusing on "where" and "when" but shared two models from homework that used "why" beautifully
??? (when writing) Where? When? - begin with that phrase (ex: Over the weekend, ; In San Diego, ; Last weekend, ; In the dinosaur era millions of years ago,)
* identifying and using a consistent key to locate, mark, and discuss: nouns, pronouns, proper nouns, verbs, adjectives, introductory phrases, and added information for clarification ("Who has a clarifying question?" and "Who can paraphrase what he/she just said?" - 2 key questions they hear every morning)
* BAM Wall
??? What did you do on the BAM Wall today?
some friends - number recognition to 30, counting by 10's, counting forward and backward to and from 30, finishing number patterns, showing amounts on ten frames, automaticity with ten frames, and recording information using tally marks
other friends - using an integer board (negatives and positives added to 1-100 board) to determine a secret number, counting patterns (identify, order, finish, and add to advanced counting strategies), symmetry (rotational symmetry and "flipping" or "folding" designs on their own through drawing), decomposing larger numbers, place value to the millions, value of each numeral in a large number
* Writing
??? What did you do to write or plan for writing today?
some friends - guided writing, letter formation, high frequency words
other friends - Tree Map to organize dinosaur information to plan nonfiction writing
* science
incorporating the language of the discipline (paleontology) across the learning all day long
* photos of the dinosaur dig and other fun dinosaur photos were taken, developed, and added to their dinosaur nonfiction writing books over the weekend for their enjoyment at the "exhibit" today
* a friend taught us about the Natural History Museum
* a friend taught us about a catapult using the language of depth and complexity (icons) as the framework of the speech/teaching - amazing!
