The children shared so many ideas, examples, and situations involving robots protecting people. They are so enthusiastic to share their ideas and bounce off each other during our conversations. Thank you! Your consistency and dedication at home to the unique goals of the homework are truly paying off. You should hear what they say, the vocabulary used, and the connections from one idea to another. It truly is remarkable! Using their ideas, we added to our depth and complexity chart in every area listed:
- names of robots and identification of the role each plays (helping, entertainment, protecting, etc.)
- enriched vocabulary (deactivated, prototype - their words not mine :) )
- ethics
- proving with evidence (books, videos, newspaper clippings, etc)
They even generated an analogy which was expanded upon to teach a new Thinking Map called a Bridge Map.
Here's the analogy they created during the discussion that was connected to our focus in writing and love of baseball by some friends:
relating factor: "is a first try in"
(can't draw the Thinking Map so an attempt at using the words only is shown below)
" A prototype is a first attempt in building a robot just like a rough draft is a first attempt in writing just like try outs are a first attempt in baseball."
Simply incredible!!!
Your child made a Rolie Polie Olie Glyph today following criteria. This was followed up with the creation of an "All About Me Robot" for some friends (others in a small group on Monday). The robot involved a great deal of personal information written by each child. While writing my sample, I wrote the title of my favorite book which was used to make a video for my little one while in China last year so she could still see me "reading her our favorite bedtime story". It was surprising to see that nobody had the book or had heard of it. So, it is being listed below (no affiliation or benefit to me :)). In light of our year and technology use, it's a must have for everyone even if only to have as a keepsake of being the first class in the district to have individual iPads.
"Goodnight, iPad" - a remake of "Goodnight Moon" - funny and telling of our society today :)
