It was a short but productive day. :)
Your child has likely already told you all about Dr. Yen's fun lessons on our teeth. He incorporated the icons and linked it to our learning and what was taught by Dr. Dave and Dr. Shirley two weeks ago. The children were very excited about the connections. Did you know that teeth are like the rock cycle? Your child can tell you all about it along with the following:
- how to take care of our teeth
- why teeth move and what happens if one permanent tooth comes out between two others (acted it out)
- the quadrants in our mouths and how often to brush each
- how to floss and why
- the sugar content in each of the following: soda, diet soda, water, juice
- parts of the tooth
- how the enamel of the tooth connects to rocks
- how our teeth become worn down by erosion just like . . . :) you guessed it!
- what decayed teeth look like when compared to healthy teeth
- why we need to care for our teeth
- which group they want to be in - first or second? :)
Your child also had music class and the media center today.
In your child's folder, you will find the spelling pretest results. Please look carefully at the center column to see how your child's "metacognition" (term we discussed today) is developing. The goal is to create self-regulated learners which means that they know how, when, and what they know and need further practice in to become even better students. If your child was unsure about a word and spelled it incorrectly, then it was a "metacognitive match". Your child knows what he/she does not know and presumably what he/she does know. :) The words that were incorrect are the learning opportunities for the week and require extra attention. It was so obvious who practiced using the games over the weekend without anticipating the pretest. :) The focus for the words includes contractions and homophones.
The digital edition of TFK (a million thanks to all of you!) is on the left side of the main blog. If you are reading this on a smartphone, then it may not be visible. It is related to the election tomorrow and is fun to read on the iPad. :)
Speaking of the election, if it is possible to bring your child with you into the booth then it would be a fun opportunity to share with the class (if you vote).
One child tested the Brainpop link on the iPad today and it did not open. Our code in case you need it is: weaverwhale (both places). However, the company behind Brainpop has made it available free for everyone in light of Superstorm Sandy. Therefore, it may not be necessary to log in at all. The video for this week is simply called "Presidents", but there are 5 other great videos available at no cost this week.
Just a reminder to contact the office if you are interested in having anyone honored at the Veteran's Day flag ceremony this Friday. Everyone is welcome!
