Table talk or morning car ride ideas:
- how America Rocks linked to biographies (5 ways thanks to our first biography of Rosa Parks!) :)
- Time for Kids - what we did after reading the magazine
- BAM Wall on iPads
- the White House lego model brought in by Jacob
Guess what? Now they want to turn our Lego city into Washington D. C. thanks to Jacob's model. What a terrific idea! If your child suddenly asks for the Lincoln Memorial Lego kit while shopping, now you'll know why. It was the one they jumped in and said we needed first. What enthusiastic learners! :)
Thank you again for contributing to Spelling City! The children are actually excited for their spelling tests. :) Today in our CGI problem involving volume, Superstorm Sandy aid, and ratios, your child had to spell "enough" instead of it being written. They said, "Across the disciplines". :) Even better - when they heard the part of the biography that solved our two day old unanswered question about whether or not Rosa Parks had a monument/memorial somewhere (which they thought she deserved) a group (yes- group) shouted, "Let's take a field trip there!". It was Washington D.C. ! :) I said it was on the east coast. They said, "We can take an airplane!" Enthusiasm and problem solving at its best! :)
One other memorable moment: When we got to the part of the biography when Rosa Parks sat down and would not get up from her seat in the bus, the class clapped! :) They all think she definitely deserves to be honored among the "people who changed our world in a positive way".
Our first biography is now finished as well as our "America Rocks" note taking booklets which have involved our iPad and 4 C's research. The first exploration was guided, the next four were in randomized groups, and the last was independent. Today your child took a test to assess what was really learned (on iPads for immediate feedback to both them and me :) ). The five links to our focus on "America Rocks" were: Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., autobiographies (writing ours), and elections (she wanted the right to vote). The timing was as perfect as it could be. :) Our discussions included: bravery, personal strength, World War II, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Civil Rights Movement, and the life of Rosa Parks.
Speaking of the war, we all want to thank the veterans who have also faced risks to try to change our world in a positive way. :)
